I have a German friend who has been in Canada since last December on a 1 year Work permit. He is going to be leaving the country next week and we are wondering if there is a required amount of time that he must be out of Canada before returning.
Can anyone please help me find the answer to this?

Returning as what and for how long? Returning as a visitor?

He would be returning to Canada as a visitor.
I am just trying to find out how long he needs to be out of Canada before returning.

There's no hard and fast rule on how long he needs to be outside of Canada before returning. Whether he's allowed back in and for how long depends on the CBSA officer at the border. The officer's decision will also be influenced by things like how long he's planning on visiting. If he's coming back for a couple of weeks - he should have no issues returning immediately. If he's going try for a six month visit, the officer may be concerned he's attempting to live in Canada without authorization if he returns too soon. Again, no black and white answer...
