Maybe its RAMQ or maybe it's pregnancy brain because I'm having really hard time.

I have been told by RAMQ that even without PR I can apply for health care and should be covered once I get my letter due to being pregnant (which is a relief because so far it's cost me around $3000).

They are asking for a list of things to go with my form to prove that I am allowed in Canada etc.

- Original Certificate de Selection
- Letter from CIC stating my application status.
- Letter proving where I live.
- 4 passport photos.
- Original visitors permit.

Now The first 4 things listed I can do no problem I know what they all are.

The last item however is what I am stuck with.

What is a visitors permit? I am from the UK and as far as I was aware I only needed my passport to enter Canada, we aren't given visas or anything like that.

So my question is, is my passport the permit? Or is it something else? As for everything else that I have applied for I have only ever shown my passport and work permit to prove I am allowed here, and nothing has been asked.

You should be fine with just your passport ... my wife came over and we showed them her passport which had a single entry VISA on it since she was from a country that was not visa-exempt. The passport will also serve as your proof of ID :P

For anyone else looking at the exceptions where the RAMQ will provide coverage, here is an excerpt from their website,

Generally speaking, if you arrive in Québec from outside Canada, even if you are a Canadian citizen, you will be eligible for the Québec Health Insurance Plan after a waiting period of up to 3 months following your registration.

The Régie does not reimburse you for healthcare you receive during the waiting period.
Pending receipt of your card, be sure to keep the letter indicating that you are subject to a waiting period, because some healthcare services are available free of charge to persons waiting for their coverage to take effect, such as services:

  • needed by victims of conjugal or domestic violence or of sexual assault;
  • related to pregnancy, child birth or termination of pregnancy;
  • needed by people suffering from infectious diseases that have an impact on public health.

We put in our application at the local CLSC, and they were very helpful to make sure that all the documents were in order before sending it in. Remember for the letter, its usually a sworn afidavit from the owner or the person who has their name on the lease. The CLSC staff are oath commissioners so if you go there with the person and the letter, they will attest it on the spot.
