i was thinking of going down to a POE to reinstate my status rather than waiting all the months to get it before sending off my PR/rehab applications.
- i messed up my initial extension of stay (just sent form, nothing else)

Me, my Canadian born wife and Canadian citizen-cert holding kids go down with all my papers etc.
The upside is I don't have to wait for my status, and when re-entering, they ask me about convictions - hear that they are both over 10 years (including driving ban), and deem me rehab'd

Could they issue a work permit there?

The downside is i dont get in and stuck in no-mans land on the Freedom Bridge and given just a 3 day visa to get a flight home

any suggestions?

Has your status expired in Canada? If so, what status did you have? (Visitor? Something else?) And when did it expire?

Do you have an approved LMO?

came in as a visitor from a visa exempt country (Ireland), Sept 2010, i sent application to extend before the 6months were up but i made a mess of it - just sent off the form.

That was denied - no phone call, email or letter to send on the documents

1888 said that was the only problem.

My status expired 83 days ago.

I dont want to put on 0008 form about status in Canada as not having any and i dont want to wait 9 months for the re-instatement to be processed

Based on what you've said, you don't qualify for a work permit.

Have you filed the PR sponsorship application yet? (It doesn't sound like you have based on your first post). If you haven't, then I think that flag polling will be risky and you could end up being refused re-entry.

Just my opinion... Definitely wait for others to respond. Maybe someone has been through something similar.

Good luck.
