So, I'm Canadian, live in Ontario and want to sponsor my American wife. All good, but the thing is... I was on social assistance (OW) for more than a year, while contemplating going on disability (ODSP). Fortunately I've been through physical therapy which improved my condition, and being confident enough to get back in the game I went off OW in September. Currently, I don't have a job but I am a student.

I know there's a bit about how sponsors are required not to be in receipt of social assistance, but that's somewhat vague. Does this mean I don't qualify as a sponsor--period? Or that I have to be off social assistance for a certain amount of time before I am good to go? Given the nature of my circumstances I wonder... would it make any difference if, with my application, I included documents from my Doctor?

I've searched high & low on this forum but can't seem to find a definitive answer, so I hope by miracle someone can help. ;)

Thanx for any replies.

another quick suggestion. Ask your wife if she is qualified to apply her own PR?

As long as you're not on social assistance when you apply you'll be fine. Do you have proof you are no longer on it? You should send it with the application.
Disability does not count as social assistance, nor does EI.
