Hi all. I recently found this site last year and saw how helpful it was. I finally decided to set-up an account for my partner and I to ask any questions.

I am 29 and from NY (US citizen) and my boyfriend is 22 from Ontario (Canadian citizen.) We want to get married within a couple years after I complete grad school and have experience in health administration. We were wondering if we are supposed to get married and wait a couple years before applying, or soon after we get married he can apply for the spousal sponsorship program? How does that work exactly so we don't look suspicious? Also am I allowed to keep my US citizenship? I thought I was able to because from what I read children of US and CA citizens get dual citizenship and I was wondering if that would apply for me as well.

We've been dating almost a year. We see each other every couple weeks and spend the holidays and school breaks with each other. His family and friends love me, and mine love him. We are so in love with each other that it just pains us to go without each other, because as Harry said in When Harry Met Sally, "When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." And unfortunately given our circumstances it's just not possible right now. He works full-time and I am in school full-time graduating with my undergrad in May, then I'll go to grad school.

We have decided to marry here and I will just need to fill out a visa form for him correct? And I did see there is a certain required income he needs to have in order to sponsor me to live there. I am a little confused on that though. According to the boxes since there would be 2 of us, my boyfriend would need to make $30,286 or $30,495 CAD? He lives with his parents right now and is saving up so we can have a house when I am able to move.

I have 2 cats and I have spoken to the border department and they said the boys would just need letters and records from their veterinarian and they should be fine.

This also leads me to ask about personal belongings including appliances. I've seen some contradicting information on this site. When that day happens and I move everything from my house in NY to a home in CA, I just need to make sure to pile every single thing in a moving van including my appliances and have a list of my belongings? I have a brand new bed set (mattress and box springs) and I read some people say it needs to be fumigated and others say no it doesn't. My parents have a cottage in Fort Erie and my dad thinks mattresses aren't allowed but I figured I'd ask here. My dad mentioned something about paying a duty fee as well for my items. Is this true?

I have had 5 years of working in different fields of medicine. I have degrees in office management and administration and in health and wellness. My masters will be in health services administration. I've been looking for career outlooks in Canada and it says a healthcare manager has been a top position for the past couple years. Do you think I would have trouble finding work in Canada for this position, especially as an American? He wants to live in the Kitchener-Waterloo area where he is from. From researching I believe I am not allowed to look for work or even apply for positions until I have my Permanent Resident Card then I can apply for a Work Visa, is this correct?

I do have a couple concerns on the application that I would need to fill out. It does ask if you were ever arrested I believe and if you were ever denied entrance into Canada. I was arrested at age 18 when my 15 year old brother called the police after an altercation where he beat me but because I defended myself by scratching him, and I was older I was arrested. My family was very upset with my brother. He had emotional and mental instability at the time and I was the one he took it out on. I wasn't charged with anything, and the District Attorney and Judge thought it was ridiculous what my brother did and threw the case out. How would you try and explain that in as little words as possible. Also when I was 18 or 19 a group of girls I was with wanted to go up to Canada (these were the days when you just needed proper ID or a birth certificate), and I had my ID, the driver and another girl had theirs, but the driver's sister didn't so we were turned away and we had to go into the building to answer some questions. What should I say in response to that?

I appreciate any and all input, suggestions and advice. I would be extremely grateful for any help.
