Yes visitors to Canada can certainly get married here. Family members on either side are not notified of anything.

Have you simply googled the topic?

https://www.ontario.ca/page/getting-married

Assuming you intend to apply for your "friend's" PR after getting married, how long have you been in a dating relationship/engagement with him?

Rob, to be honest with you, it sounds really fishy, doesn't it? A soon to be married couple calls the other significant one as BEST FRIEND, never heard of.

Thank you so much for responding. We have know each other for almost 7 years. And yes we have both googled the topic. Do we need to proof that as well before obtaining a marriage license and I have been reading the forums and gather that when you are here on a tourist visa you shouldn't be disclosing the fact to the IO that you intend to marry because that might lead to straight cancelation of the tourist visa. We have been going back and forth because of this worry so haven't taken steps.

I know it may sound like that but I get nervous because in a genuinely worry work and don't want to make a wrong decision

Really???

I take it you have never visited a marriage web site or forum. Everyone is always talking about how they are 'marrying their best friend'. It's one of the most overused phrases ever (apart from 'over the moon'). Saying you're marrying your best friend is a common phrase in North America. It means you aren't just marrying someone you love but also someone with whom you have a genuine and very close friendship.

How long have you actually been in a dating bf/gf relationship? That will be the key issue for future PR app. If you've been dating 7 years, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about with a quick civic marriage. Else if you've just been "friends" for most of that time and not actually in a committed relationship until recently, a quick civic wedding could raise lots of red flags (i.e. that you are marrying him in secret simply to get him PR status).

You are right, when applying for the TRV it's probably best not to mention he intends to come to Canada to get married. He should simply state he is coming to visit you. And at point of entry he doesn't need to volunteer the intent to get married to CBSA, however if they question him and ask directly, he must not lie to them. It's not illegal for a visitor to get married in Canada, so even if he ends up telling this to CBSA it doesn't mean they will cancel his visa. As long as they are satisfied he will follow the rules surrounding visitors, he would still be allowed entry.

It may because I am an old school guy, and didn't social enough with young generation.

Not that young either - but I have no choice. I have too many millennials on my team at the office. :)

'Over the moon' is the one driving me insane these days. So overused. Having said that, I'm sure I said things at that age that drove my elders crazy.

Understood. And I am on my way to 50, so you can imagine how weird when I heard people say they are going to marry to their BEST FRIENDS

Thank you so much for responding and yes he is a friend first more than anything else. We both are being very caucitous and don't want to cause any sort of setbacks in regards to any parts in our lives. Any other thing we both should be looking out for before investing in to this ?

I still don't understand, how long have you actually been dating as boyfriend/girlfriend? Not just as friends, but as an actual loving couple.

Well - since your cautious, you should be aware that by sponsoring him you will become financially responsible for him for three years after he lands in Canada and becomes a PR. This means that if he goes on social assistance during that time, you will be responsible for paying this money back to the government (this applies even if your relationship goes sour and you break up - you'll still be responsible). This can easily amount to tens of thousands of dollars that you can end up having to repay. This is a commitment that all of us here have had to make as sponsors.
