Hello,

I am Canadian and my wife is American. She has been with me in Canada since November 2011, we married in January of this year but have been debating wether to apply from outland or inland. After realizing how long it will take from inland, it seems like a no brainer to apply from outland. With that, we decided to head to New Zealand where we have both got working visas (took 4 days!!!!!!)

My main question is are we going to be able to apply just before we leave and where should her permanent address and mailing addresses be? Its been so tricky to find any solid answers from Immigration Canada and I appreciate any insight anyone on here might have.

Thanks,

Trevor

Permanent address would be wherever you intend to return to in Canada. Mailing address would be where you are in NZ. You will need to demonstrate that you fully intend to re-settle in Canada when your wife is approved for PR, having a recently-issued work permit for another country could work against that, so show clearly you retain your ties to Canada and how you will resume your lives there once she is approved.

We are not planning on heading to New Zealand until November. Should we apply from Canada asap and then change our mailing address once we get to New Zealand?

If you can send the application off before leaving Canada, yes, go ahead and do so. Sponsor approval is taking about 3 months now, so if you get that out of the way before, it will be one less thing to deal with while you are sorting yourselves out in NZ. You can always change your mailing address later. Make sure you provide an email address, and that someone is collecting your mail in Canada in case you get the approval letter via snail mail.

What about the fact that she has been living with me in Canada? Even though we are in Canada, we can apply from outside? Because she has been on visitor visas, does that mean we should put her permanent address as perhaps her parents place in the USA, or the address we have been living at in Canada?

Thanks for your responses.
