Hello guys, as I am going to apply for an study permit in Canada for next fall, I am a bit nervous about my previous overstay in the US. Although these two countries do share immigration information on third country national, is there any section of Canadian law which bars someone like this kind of case from obtaining a study permit visa? I presume the overstay part in the US will be known by electronic notification, BUT will it make me unqualified to study in Canada also? Inputs are appreciated.

A student visa is a temp immigrant visa so a previous overstay in another country can be an issue.....Having said that, it does not mean an automatic rejection. It depends on the Visa Officer and if they are satisfied that you will return to your home country once your visa expires

The overstay will certainly make it more difficult for you to qualify. How much more difficult depends on how long the overstay was, if you were removed from the US, how long ago the overstay was and how effectively you have reestablished yourself in your home country since returning.

Although it was an overstay of two years in US, I did leave the country voluntarily in June 2011. I have got enough resources at home and well employed at this time. Getting a post graduation degree from a North American university is my priority and I could possibly come back to my country as well. I can strongly establish my social and family ties in my home country to demonstrate a non-immigrant intent. My TOEFL and GRE are also good enough to support my bona fideness. I may have to justify my future goals in the light of my current circumstances in the SOP as well.
