I know there is a medical exam needed for immigration purposes. I was under the impression it needed to be done in your home country (the US, for me) but have heard i could have had it done while in Canada. Is this true? If so, how does it work out being without medical insurance up there? How much would it cost compared to the States? (Around $450-500)

You can do it wherever you want to (any country). It's up to you to cover the costs of the exam. Costs vary from city to city and doctor to doctor in Canada - but should be less than in the US.
