I became a new citizen last year. What does that mean for my son who was born outside Canada. Does he become a citizen or do I need to apply to sponsor him for PR.

Assuming he was born prior to you becoming a Citizen, you would have to sponsor him for PR. After being in Canada as a PR for sufficient time he will be eligible to apply for citizenship - just like you.
If you have any new children born after the time you became a citizen, they are automatically Canadian citizens by descent.
