Question about visiting Canada after filing our application

I'm planning a visit to see my husband in November, by which time we hope to have secured SA.

I'm not sure what I write on the Customs card given out on the flight.

Do I enter as a tourist/visitor?
Do I tell CBSA that we have an application filed?

(I'm a Brit, so visa-exempt)

I know I'm thinking ahead but I like to get my head around the options well in advance.

Last time I booked my flight I had to complete a questionnaire so want to make sure I do things correctly.

You are entering as a visitor to visit your husband while your PR app processes. It's a very common situation for CBSA.
