Hi there,

I am sorry guys, I know this forum is not about tax filling but I am pretty sure we all support our spouse's specially if they are not in Canada, which I do send money to my wife and I have all the receipts for 2013 is it possible to claim that.

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

no you cannot claim money you send for support. But if you do your taxes as married you will get a tax credit for your spouse which will allow you to pay less tax. If your spouse works abroad, you will need to list her income, if not you just use 0. Also for her social insurance number on your tax return use 000 000 000. Please make sure you call CRA to update your marital status if you havent done so already. Advise them that your wife is a non resident. They will ask you for your wife's name and date of birth only.

You dont need to call them, just put that you're married on your tax return. you will have to fill out the full name, birthdate, last years income and choose non resident. When you file your taxes CRA will then have all of the information there is no need to inform them of your marriage by phone.

Thank you so much guys for the information.
