Thank you for stopping by. I have a question about resident days and the residency calculator on CIC website.

I came to Canada for university in September 2006. I finished my study and got a job in April 2012. I applied for PR under CEC program and am in process (just done my medical exam). .

I used the residence calculator on CIC website to see how long do I need to become a citizen, I put down today's date as the permanent residence date as well as the application date (the calculator doesn't allow me to put a future date). The calculator shows ~700 days of residency. I get this one because only 4 years preceding the application are counted

It also says I can apply for citizenship in February 2016. However, According to the basic residence requirement:

"You must live in Canada for three (3) years (1,095 days) within the four (4) years (1,460 days) immediately before applying for citizenship."

If I already have ~700 days, don't I just need 1095-700= ~395 more days before I apply for citizenship? Why does it say I will meet the basic residence requirement on 2016-02-25?

Thanks in advance for your help!

You need 395 more days. But it's not like you can apply in 395 days from now. I'm assuming that the current calculation is counting your pre-PR days at 1/2. So as you go forward, you would gain 1/2 a day, not a whole day. This is because the 1/2 day you gain as a pre-PR comes off the book while you gain one full day. Hence the net is 1/2 day you gained for your RO for each day going forward. This is until the beginning of your 4 years passes the date you became a PR. Then you would gain a full day.

I hope that made sense :)

Thanks Keesio for your quick reply.

If I understand correctly, let's say if I become a PR on June 1, 2014, I still have 730 existing residence days. Does that mean from then on, I need to stay in Canada for 395 more full days in order to apply for citizenship? That would mean I'll be eligible on July 1, 2015, hypothetically :P

Assuming your become a PR on June 1, 2014, you can apply for citizenship June 1, 2016 under CURRENT rules. This assumes you have NOT stepped foot outside Canada from June 1, 2012 - June 1, 2016.

From June 1, 2012 - June 1, 2014 you get 365 days (Each pre-PR day counted at 0.5)
From June 1, 2014 - June 1, 2016 you get 730 days (Each PR day counted as 1 full day)

365 + 730 = 1095

ahh now I understand. Basically one needs to be a PR for at least 2 years before applying for citizenship, no matter how long he/she stayed in Cananda pre-PR time :(:(

Right. It's because you can only go as far back as 4 years. Any time you have before then doesn't count at all. It is impossible to get your 1095 days in a 4 year stretch if at least 2 years of those 4 is not full PR days.
