Hi all, need your help to understand my situation better.
I am a Canadian PR and I got it before getting married. So my wife and baby are not PR yet. I am yet to move to Canada and will be moving in by next month through my current employer. My wife and kid are going to be in India. My wife also works for the same employer and they are ready to do a work permit for her and she will also be joining me in Canada in few months.

My question is, when should I apply for their PR sponsorship? Is it while they are in India or after they come to Canada? I read somewhere that outland applications are getting processed quicker than inland applications. In that case, if I apply for them while they are in India, can they still come to Canada while their applications gets processed in New Delhi? Please advice.

You can sponsor outland even if your wife is in Canada so it doesn't really matter. However, if you want to apply outland, you might as well fill out the forms now while you are with your wife and she can fill out her part of the forms and then you send them in once you arrive in Canada. As a PR, you must be residing in Canada in order to sponsor.

She can still come to Canada on a work permit even if she has an outland application going but there might be a problem mailing the passport between countries.

Thanks Leon. I have already started the process of getting to know all the forms needed to be filled by her. One problem I saw was with the PCC. She has stayed in US for around 3 years and hence we will need FBI clearance certificate. I am really not sure when I should apply for that because of the processing time involved there and the PCC needs to be within 3 months of applying for PR.

Also, about sending the passport across countries, no other solution there?

I suppose when she must send the passport to India to get the PR visa, she could mail it to her relatives, forbidden but don't ask, don't tell. They do not know if she had a courier bring it over or how. The relatives can send it to the visa office for her and she would give their address to mail it back to so the would mail it back to Canada.

It takes a while to get the FBI clearance so you should apply for it now.

Thanks again Leon. I am thinking about her medicals. She will be given a medical request form down the line when the processing is being done. And they would send it to the Indian address, whereas she would be residing with me in Canada. Can we still do the medicals in Canada ? will that not create any questions?

Yes, you can still do the medicals in Canada. Just make sure you tell them they are outland medicals. You can do medicals anywhere in the world you can find a Canada immigration approved doctor. There will be no questions. She is free to travel during her processing time, even to Canada if she has a visa.
