question about PPR and physical passport

Hi

Do you guys know if we have to send the passport itself for PPR?
I called the immigration call centre and got different answers: one mentioned that for french passport, you only need to send a copy ( he said France was visa exempt) and the other one said that I would need to send the passport itself (France not in visa exempt country)
I checked on cic site and could not clearly confirm what was the correct process

I have not received PPR ( yet ) I am trying to anticipate my trips for next few months. If I am on a trip, I will not be able to send the passport itself.
