Hello All,

I am an international student from South Asia. I was studying at an institution in Montreal, QC, and was informed that I have been dismissed from the program due to low GPA. I appealed the decision as per university rules. Furthermore, my study permit and CAQ both expire in approximately three weeks. CAQs howver have been given automatic extension till the end of December.

Because of the dismissal, I cannot apply for the renewal of the study permit and CAQ. I am waiting the appeal decision. If a favourable decision is given, I will continue at my current institution. If not, I will change to an institution in Ontario. My question is, what should I do to remain in Canada after my study permit expires, now that I have been dismissed and before I get admission to another institution?

Eagerly waiting for your help, thanks!

You will have a restoration period if your current SP expires without a path forward. I understand that the restoration period has been extended until the end of 2020 so you should have enough time to figure out your next step.

You should probably apply in the Ontario institutions you want to go to, then if you get dismissed just transfer your DLI on the myCIC website.

Thank you for your prompt response! Big help!

Now, could please specify what the restoration period is? Will I be illegal in Canada if I stay past my SP expiration without being enrolled at an institution?

What you should do? Study harder and try less to spend your parents' money on car modifications. Just kidding. But how is it even possible to end up below the minimum GPA? Most professors in Canada give points for ink usage alone.

Unfortunately points are not given for ink usage at my school. It is a research-intensive, phd preparation program, and very mathematical. I realized I wasn't prepared to deal with the rigors of this program but wanted to give it another try. Didn't work out well in the end.
