So currently my boyfriend is visiting me and we're going to apply for an extension so we can become a common law relationship but I don't quite understand how we're supposed to prove common law in the end when he can't get most of the things we need because he is just a visitor.

1. A statutory declaration of common-law union
What is it? I read that it's some sort of oath or something along those lines. Is that correct? Where do we go to a get a statutory declaration of a common-law union?

2. Shared of finances
We're working on getting a shared bank account right now. Just trying to find a bank who will accept us. It's hard since he is on a visitor status. I'm assuming after we get the account we will be able to get shared credit cards. Any suggestions of banks that will give us both?

3. Proof of cohabitation and financial support
Not sure how were supposed to get shared ownership of residential property, joint leases or rental agreements, or shared utility bills because I currently live with my parents and he's been staying at my parents house with me. Would it be good enough if my parents wrote a lease or something explaining that we're staying at their house?

4. Same address on important documents
How are we supposed to get important documents showing that we both live at the same address? Since he is a visitor he is not allowed to do much. So what kind of documents can a visitor get that would prove the same address? Also what kind of identification can he get as a visitor?

5. Insurance policies
What kind of insurance policies can I take out that will help us? I don't want to take out life insurance because we're both only in our early 20's and I think it would be a waste of money. So what useful insurance can I take out?

6. Letters of support from family and friends
How many of these letters should we get? And is it okay that only one person's family only writes them?

7. Evidence of staying in touch over long-distance
How much evidence do we need for this? We used Skype to talk for the majority of time and then we started using discord since Skype kept disconnecting our calls. Skype will only show 4 months worth of calls even though we've talk way more then that on there. Discord doesn't have much of a history since we mainly talked over a server which doesn't log chats. We have a few calls on discord but not much.

8. Lastly, does all of the proof we need to be over a course of 12 months? (Example: do we have to have a shared bank account for 12 months for it to be counted as proof?) I ask because right now we don't have much and when we apply for the extension we're only asking for 6 months. So most of our stuff will probably only be recently new and maybe only 6 months old. Should we ask for 1 year instead of 6 months so our stuff is older and we can get more? I just don't want to ask for too big of an extension and get denied.

Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

We arent common law, legally married so can help with a few things. Cibc allowed him to open an account as a visitor. We got him an ontario id card fir address. Added him to my home insurance policy, cell phone bill, work benefits and made him a beneficiary for my rrsps. I also added him to my lease but im sure letters from your parents will suffice

I'm just going to respond to a few of those points as you've got some advice from others already,
1. Go to a notary and get the statement filled in and signed off.
3. Can you possibly get a joint cellphone plan? When you've officially lived together for 12 months, you can changed your status with the CRA and take a screenshot of that.
4/8. You need to have proof of when you started living together - meaning something that shows a date that you've been living in the same place for 12 months. Getting your parents to make up a lease (have it backdated) and also having them include that in your letter is a start. The bank account doesn't need to have existed for 12 months, as that's not necessarily something to show cohabitation, but I'd start collecting whatever you can now to show that he currently lives with you. Any kind of mail addressed to him at your address is good, get him to sign up for a grocery store rewards card or a gym membership or make an online shopping order and keep the receipt with shipping details and you can use that. My partner was able to get a drivers licence in BC while he was there, so try getting that as well. The leisure centre in my city also does photo id cards, they don't include an address but it still shows that you've been making a habit of actually 'living' in the community and not just visiting. See if there's one near you that might do that?
5. Is he on any kind of medical/travel insurance while visiting you? Have him call the company and add you as his beneficiary and ask them to send him a statement of this.
6. We submitted 3 letters, one from each of our moms and 1 from a friend. I think 2-3 is enough, it's fine if it's just one family.
7. If you're applying when you're already living together then you won't need much for this. We just included a few screenshots for about 3 months worth prior to when we moved in together.

Just ask for a 6 month extension for now, you can apply for another 6 month extension.
