I've been doing a lot of research to answer my questions but I'm having a hard time finding answers.

I was born (in wedlock) in 1998, in the United States, to an American mother and Canadian-born father (who had Canadian citizenship). I'm pretty sure this means I have Canadian citizenship by descent (I'm 1st generation), but I am unsure if my birth was ever registered in Canada. I have never lived in Canada but I have aunts and uncles there. I am able to obtain proof of my citizenship if my birth was not registered in Canada? As far as I know, there are no records of my birth or citizenship status in Canada. What are the steps I need to take in order to obtain proof of or retain my Canadian citizenship?

Thank you so much for your help!

As your 1 parent Canadian born citizen at the time of your birth, you are a likely Canadian citizen. You have to apply for proof of citizenship with the required documents from the application checklist.

i am not sure how one would or could register his birth in canada while he/she was born in usa. why would canada register you in other words (unless I am not getting what you are saying)... Provinces in Canada will only have birth registration for the people who are born in the Provinces....i am not an expert but i think you would need your birth certificate that has your parents name and your parents citizenship at the time of your birth.... my opinion.

As per law, your father was not obliged to register your birth outside Canada. All you need to fill up the application form with your and your father information and check the box (You were born outside Canada to a Canadian parent on or after January 1, 1947). Submit application with copy of 2 ID, 2 Photo and Fees $75. You will be fine..Hope this helps..
