Hello,

My wife and I started the sponsorship process for her parents about 5 years ago and went diligently through all the stages, and now my in-laws received the latter and forms to do the medicals. Unfortunately, my father-in-law (the principal applicant) has fallen seriously ill in the meantime and will definitely not pass any medical examination. The letter states the medicals must be completed within 60 days.

Is it possible to "freeze" the file for 6 months,1 year or maybe more? We hope for the best, but fear for the worst, and would like to continue the application only for my mother-in-law if the worst should occur. Apparently, it is possible to change the principal applicant in such circumstances. To reapply, with the given wait times, would be pretty much pointless.

Does anyone have experience with this? I am thinking to write the embassy and ask for the file to remain "pending" and not be closed, if possible.

Thank you,
Marc

1. No you can't freeze the application.
2. If the worse should occur, then you can switch the principal application read: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/bulletins/2012/ob369.asp
3. But if he fails the medical then there is a good chance the application will be refused.

Thank you very much for the information. In your opinion, is there something we could do to lengthen the process in which a decision is made? There is no doubt in my mind he would fail the medicals now.

Thanks again!
