Hi. Should all members in a family who have a PR card should live in Canada for 720 days for renewal or just the primary applicant should stay? please explain.

All members must stay

Thank you. If my PR card expires in Feb 2021, when do you think it is safe to start living in Canada for a safe renewal? I have completed my landing formalities in 2016 and I am not in US now.

Your PR card expiry date is irrelevant in determining the residency obligation. You must reside in the country a minimum of 730 days in the first 5 years from your landing date.

Having landed say january 2016 then left shortly after the maximum you can stay away would be 3 years returning say by end December 2018. However then you must stay for 2 years without leaving the country.

Once a family has landed each member of the family unit must meet the residency obligation in their own right, the primary applicant residency obligation is not relevant to the other family members.
