PR card

Hi I recently was suppose to go Dubai on Etihad airlines and from there go to Lahore Pakistan , they did not allow us to travel because our Pakistani PR cards were expired . In pakistan they let you in and you just have to make a new one as soon as possible. They did not listen and our trip was cancelled. I keep searching online that you can also travel without a PR card I just wanted to verify the situation
