PR Card Renewal buffer period

Hi everyone,

I am living in Canada with an expired PR card. I will meet 730 day RO by Feb 24th, can I apply renewal on 25th or do I need to give a buffer period? I wish to travel before March 26th. Will I get my PR card by then or should I wait? is it risky to travel without it?

If you are confident, then no buffer needed. Nobody knows if you get it renewed before your travel. Things like Canada Post is always unpredictable.

You should definitely apply with a buffer. If you apply without a buffer, the chances will be very high that your card will be sent for secondary review and take much longer to process.

You can leave Canada without a valid PR card but you need to have a valid PR card or valid PRTD to be able to board a flight to return to Canada (unless your trip is to the US only).

Thank you for the reply. Can I book a CBSA ATIP request 1 month prior to renewal application? While my PR card is expired.

At least a month would be advisable. The other big issue is whether you will no longer meet your RO during your travels which could make returning via PRTD a problem. If out of Canada you may also have to pick up your cars in person. Booking travel in March was not good idea given your situation. Could you delay travel?
