Hi everyone,

I would like some advise on a current situation. My boyfriend and I are currently dating and he has submitted his PR application, i'm also in the process of doing the same, so we won't need to sponsor each other. We are planning on getting married mostly likely after his application has been finalised, but before mine (this would be after submitting my full application). Are there any procedures that we have to follow for this since I'll most likely be entering Canada as a married woman and my boyfriend will already have PR status? Thank you all for your help.

If you get married after he becomes PR and before your application is finalized, you need to inform IRCC of the change in your marital status.

And just to make things clear, when you say dating, are you living together or not

Thank you. Just so I'm clear, will it be me to inform the IRCC since his application has been finalised right? What steps will I then have to take since he doesn't need sponsorship? I guess what I'm asking is what are the steps for that kind of situation?

Also, I should have mentioned, it's a long distance relationship, we live in separate countries so aren't living together.

If the marriage happens after his application has been approved but before he lands (that’s when he actually becomes a PR), he needs to inform IRCC. You need to inform IRCC too. Your applications will likely be re-assessed, thus taking further processing time. If he hasn’t landed, they could cancel his CoPR and immigrant visa, and only re-issue after the re-assessment.

Also, you probably would want to write a letter of explanation indicating that the reason why you didn’t put down common-law as marriage status in your application was because of long-distance.

What if the marriage happens after he has landed, would he still need to contact IRCC? The other question is if we married before my application has been finalised and I contact IRCC, why will my application be re-assessed since my spouse is already a PR?

If the marriage happens after he lands, then he doesn't need to do anything. You will simply need to update IRCC with the marriage and a copy of his COPR or PR card if he has it by then. Your app will not be re-assessed.
