HEY ALL!!!!!

TRYING TO START THIS THREAD TO FIND OUT EXACTLY WHAT NEEDS TO BE AFTER LANDING IN CANADA

I KNOW WE NEED TO GET THE PR CARD - GETTING THAT IS PRETTY STRAIGHTFORWARD

AFTER THAT IS THE HEALTH CARD - HOW DO YOU GET THAT? THAT SEEMS COMPLICATED

YOU ALSO NEED A SOCIAL INSURANCE NUMBER (SIN) CARD - HOW DO YOU GET THAT?

ALSO HOW DO U OPEN A BANK ACCOUNT IN CANADA?

REGARDS

AVISHEK

1. Health Card: Check out this link http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/subjects/cards/health_card.shtml. I think there are different eligibility criteria for different provinces. Just check out your province and you should be good to go.

2. SIN Card: It is pretty straight forward too. Go to http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/cgi-bin/hr-search.cgi?app=hme&ln=eng and check out the nearest Service Canada center. Go there with your passport and landing papers and tell them you want to apply for SIN card. That's it. It took me 15 mins to do it.

3. Bank account: Getting a bank account opened in Canada is pretty simple and fast. There are several banks in Canada like TD Canada Trust, RBC, Scotia Bank. Every bank has some rules on what they accept from a new customer as a deposit. Like Scotia banks needs you to bring Travellers cheques. They won't accept DD. TD Canada Trust and RBC accept DDs. Check out with people around the best bank (# of ATMs, nearest branch etc). Go there and tell them that you want to open a new account. Carry your passport and landing papers. That's it. It took me just 20 mins to get my account opened and ATM Card.

Thanks blueboy,

I just looked at your timeline and it seems that you got your passport back pretty quickly.

I am still waiting for the big shiny visas and my passports back as well.

I also do have a few other questions.

1. We plan to land in Toronto . As we have no one in Canada,

a> How do we go about finding a rentend apartment to stay ( preferably furnished)?

b> Is there a minimum amount of CAN $ we need to carry while entering Canada?

c> Any other formalities that need to be completed as well?

Please assist.
