I'm finishing my program at the end of April and when I complete the degree requirements I will apply for a post graduate work permit. I already have a job offer. I plan to begin working in July and I know that I can start working before receiving the work permit because of implied status. But my employer has an orientation in the US. I've heard I can lose my implied status if I leave Canada. Is there a way to go to this orientation and still be able to work when I return (without yet having the work permit), or should I talk to my employer? I'd have to request not to leave Canada for orientation or to begin at a later date, after I've received the work permit.

You will NOT be on implied status.

First get your work permit and then apply for TRV(if you are from visa required country) and then go to US.
