Hey all,

This is quite a technical question and I'm really hoping someone here can help me out. My girlfriend and i are from Australia and we went to Canada a couple years ago. On departure had some problems with a mobile phone plan we signed up to. I ended up getting charged for the phone well after we left and I refused to pay for it. The phone company got a debt collector onto me and i still revive emails from them to this day. (I'm not 100% sure how much information they have on me).

Now my girlfriend and I are planning to go back to Canada at the end of this year to work in your loving country and I'm really worried that having this outstanding debt and poor credit rating will affect my chances of getting a new working visa. Is there anything i can do? Will paying off the debt help? Any advise will be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks.

It won't affect your changes of getting a working visa - but it could very well impact other things such as: getting a Canadian credit card, getting a new phone plan, securing a rental agreement for an apartment, leasing a car, etc.

If you have any thoughts about remaining in Canada long term, you should pay off the debt asap to prevent further damage to your credit score.
