Yes,u can translate it by an authorized translator(private agency or else). u dont need to go to the consulate.
Any document that is not in English or French must be accompanied by:
 the English or French translation; and
 an affidavit from the person who completed the translation; and
 a certified copy of the document.(your police clearance certificate in italian language)
Note: An affidavit is a document on which the translator has sworn, in the presence of a commissioner authorized to administer oaths in the country in which the translator is living, that the contents of their translation are a true translation and representation of the contents of the original document.
Translations by family members are not acceptable.

Certified copies or notarized documents
To have a photocopy of a document certified, an authorized person must compare the original document to the photocopy and must print the following on the photocopy:
 I certify that this is a true copy of the original document‟‟
 the name of the original document
 the date of the certification
 his or her name
 his or her official position or title
 his or her signature

Yes it is the best option you can go for that . It will work without any trouble. It is legal and permitted to be carried out.

Just look in the yellow pages for Translators (you want someone who will do certified translations and will provide the affidavit), or google "certified translator" and "Los Angeles" (or whatever city/town you live in).

I already translate it with private translator and sent full docs on 07/23/2010.
thanks.

Good luck my friend...

For Better Translation for Italian to English language you can always use online language translator services. They can easily translate your language to German language and also you can get many benefit from them.

johnwriter , what you wrote he want to translate italian to english not german, he already did it from some translator as he mentioned, online translator are not valid if he translate and its not authorised translator and even without notary will not accept.
