Hi, I went to Point Roberts to get an open work permit as common law partner, my partner has a work permit teer 4 and since Feb 1 there is no need to be a high skill worker to give an open work permit to your common law partner.
They were very nice, but they made me appt to go back, they give me a form for further examination to go back in a week from now. Is that something regular? Should I be worried? Any advice?

What is your current status in Canada? What information is the form requesting?

Maintained status, the form only say examination (not admisibility). It was around 8pm when I got there and the officer told me that generally in this border they book appointment for this because is a smaller place (?). She didn’t asked me anything, or told me that there was something wrong with my application, she was very nice and kept some of my documentation and told me to bring the other info (which I had at the moment) for the appointment.

Maintained status from what? What was your previous status in Canada? Many border crossings only issue a limited number of work permits per day and usually in the morning. So what you experienced overall makes sense.

I used to have an study permit and I applied to change the conditions on my study or work permit

When did you stop studying and when does your study permit end? Your study permit can be cancelled if you are not actively studying so that’s why I am asking. What type of WP does your common law have b/c not all families of low skilled workers qualify g in r the OWP? Is your partner currently working? When does their WP end? What kind of proof do you have of your common law relationship? How long have you been living together? Do you have proof especially from the start of the 1 year like a joint lease, bills in each of your names with the date and the same address from the beginning if the 1 year common law period, etc.?

You should have gone to Peace Arch Border, Point Robert is such a small border post, i doubt they dont have resource to process your application that moment.

My study permit expired in October, and an immigration consultant recommend me to apply to change the conditions, with a letter of work of the community center were I was working at the time and my common law work permit at the moment (which is active until October 2023).

What happened before your SP expired? did you complete your studies? or you were out of status since October 2022, and you are applying to change conditions as dependant to common law partner?
