Hi everyone,

In my PhD program, I passed one course with the minimum grade of 6 on a scale from 0 to 10, which follows the Brazilian grading system.

Given the variation in grading systems across countries (for example, minimum passing grades of 6, 5, or even 60%), might a PhD diploma be questioned or considered not equivalent in the US due to having a minimum passing grade that may appear low compared to typical US expectations?

I’ve read that, at the PhD level, the evaluation process usually focuses more on factors such as:

  • the academic level and structure of the program,
  • the recognition of the awarding institution, and
  • the originality or quality of the dissertation,

rather than on individual course grades.

Is this understanding correct?
