Hi guys,

I just completed my second last semester (Sep-Dec 2014) and am about to begin my last semester of my 16 month Masters program. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, I wish to take a second leave of absence (I had taken one before this semester too) and resume my studies next semester (May-July).

My study permit expires Aug 31, 2015 which is really close to the completion of my last semester if I do it in Summer, so would it be possible to apply and get the PGWP in such a short time? Let's say my semester completes in end of July, I get my letter of completion from uni in mid-August, wouldn't it be very tight with the study permit expiration date? What happens if that date passes? Is it better not to take a leave of absence and just finish my course in April so I have 4 months to get the PGWP?

I read this online: Yes. You may remain in Canada as a temporary resident until CIC makes a decision on your new permit application, as long as your application to extend was submitted prior to the expiry of your authorized stay.

So if the above is true, I'm safe, but will I be able to arrange all docs for applying for PGWP by August??

Edit: The below poster also mentioned something about "full-time studies required in last 2 sems for PGWP"... BUT I'm not sure if taking a leave counts as NON-FULL TIME STUDIES?

just want to point out that u need to be full time student for the last two sems to be eligible for PGWP with the exception of last sem where u can be a part time student.

Does taking a semester break have anything to do with being a full-time student? I believe full-time studies simply means you have classes every week, right?

New rule as of June 2014; you must remain enrolled as a full time registered student (except in the last semester).

So if I took a semester break / leave of absence between my 2nd n 3rd semester, I'm ineligible to apply for a pnp???

Taking a break is not going to affect your PNP application ...

for work permit as soon as u get transcript from your school after finishing school apply for PGWP usually it takes 2 weeks to get approved.. even if you are not approved you can stay in canada till the time CIC make decision on your application.

let me know if you have any other question ... sorry for late reply
