Hi all,

I'm an International Student and I graduated this April (2013). In Sep 2011, I enrolled in a program but couldn't pass the exams. In Jan 2012 I enrolled in another program and cleared 1 semester. And in Sep 2012, I got enrolled in another Post Grad program (2 semesters) and finished it.

I am now planning to apply for my Post Grad Work Permit soon. I am also in a common law relationship with my partner (Permanent Resident). I have a few questions:

A. How long would I get a Work Permit for? Since technically I took 4 semesters (different programs) but cleared 3.

B. IF I am only eligible for a ONE year Work Permit, would CIC grant me a Work Permit from the day I finished my program OR the day they receive my application? Let's say I send them my application on May 30th 2013, would I get a Work Permit till May 30th 2014 or April 2014 (cause that's when I finished school)?

B. Do I attach Statutory Declaration of Common-Law Union form as I am in a common law relationship? Me and my partner haven't declared it but have filled tax returns as common law. Do you think we need to officially declare it? How and where could we find a Commissioner of Oaths?

C. My partner is a PR but his PR Card has expired. He would be applying for a renewal soon. By declaring a common law union with me (international student), would it harm his present status?

D. As my partner's PR Card has expired, would it harm me if I mention him to be my common law on the PG Work Permit form?

Any replies would be appreciated.
Thank you. ;D

1. Probably 1 year, could be 8 months, as you only passed the one course.
2. The day they send out the work permit.
3. No need for declaration of C/L union as your spouse is a PR. You won't need that until you apply for PR.
4. Has no effect.
5. See 3.
