Passport required. Can I leave canada and then mail my passport to CIC?

Hi guys,
I just received the email from CIC that required my passport. It says I have to mail the passport to them within 60 days. However, I'm going back to China (during that 60 days) for only one month. Is it OK for me to leave Canada and mail my passport to CIC from China? Or I have to stay in Canada?
