Passport Issue

Hi

I am going to upply under family class, my husband sponsoring me. Problem is my child's passport has just expired in october last month. can i still apply or do i have to first get it re-issued & then apply for PR as re-issue will take almost a month.

Pls help....

You will save a ton of time in the long run if you get the passport renewed before sending in the application. Never give CIC any reason to have to ask for anything later, it slows processing down like crazy.

I would send in the application (include letter you will send new passport for child) now it's taking about 35 days to get sponsorship approval and in the time your waiting for that re-new the passport, when you get the approval letter it will tell you what VO it is sending your file to with an address and even fax number also will have the application number and the sponsor's UCI number, by the time you get that letter you should have received the new passport you can fax copies (or mail) of the passport , include a cover letter with the application number and UCI number, your name and birth date to the VO and have them in your file before the IO even starts processing your case.

Do I need a passport or travel document?

You and your family members must have valid passports or travel documents. If any of the documents are to expire soon, you should renew them and provide copies of the new passport or travel document to the office processing your application.

Diplomatic, official, service or public affairs passports cannot be used to immigrate to Canada. You must have a valid regular or private passport when you arrive.

CPC-M may allow your application to proceed with an expired passport (since they are primarily concerned about the sponsor) but you will need to update the VO once you have a file number and visa office address. They will not issue a COPR without a valid passport on a normal sponsored application (landing without a passport requires an H&C application).
