No u dont need new passport. You can apply for PR with the old passport which is in your name.....

thank you....

It's true, you don't. But how long before the current passport expires? You might wish to factor that in.

i just have my passport last year.. but somebody told me that its better to get passport after the wedding because its easier to process my application if i am using my husband's family name... Is is true?

Nope..It makes not much difference with or without husbands name on the passport....

Indeed! It should not make any difference at all. But if it makes you "feel" better, then go with your gut. We got "new" passport with "new" family name simply since we felt that it couldn't hurt (but only help, however minutely) to do so. So now, the COPR and "PR" card are all in the family name, which I'm noticing some others on the forum are wishing they had done.

thank you guys for the info.. ive really appreciated it

On a related note, I asked this before and nobody was one hundred % sure but if I land in Ontario under my husbands surname (with my sin and pr card issued as such) if we return to quebec, will they honor it? I am a traditionalist and this is important to me. Personally, I am not comfortable with that rule. Any experiences?

My application bears my previous sir name since its the names I used when coming to Canada and didn't have a new passport(lost the old one)-However my new passport bears my hubby's name,am hoping my PR documents/card will do too!!-Well,I reckon we'll have to wait and see!

Not from personal experience but if you showed up there with said ID in hand, they would have to. BUT you said "return to Quebec"... you were there before? Which is "important" to you, to keep the family name? or your birth name? Just to be clear...

good point. My husband lives here I have been visiting here. I'm not on file as it were. But my husband lives here. My name isn't in the system. My ids will already be changed before I file.

Makes sense. I want my husbands surname. And all my ids will already be changed before I file. Ans I'm not on file there so they don't know me by any other name.

Then I think you will be fine. Specifically what Quebec does NOT recognize is a "change of surname as a result of marriage". Since your name will already have been changed, it's a moot point.
