Overstaying your visa when appying for EE.

Hello, I was wondering if someone could kindly answer a question about my friend.
Right now he is well under the cutoff score in EE. However, he will have worked for a year in Canada by January, therefore, his score will shoot up and he will probably make the nearest round of invitations. His work permit expires in February. Provided he submits the application for PR almost immediately, will he have to leave Canada while his application is under consideration?

He can most definitely continue working under implied status after applying for a BOWP.
