Hello.

I'm a Canadian resident. My wife is American. She does live here in Ontario.

Banks and credit unions around here say you have to be a Canadian resident with a Social Insurance Number to open an account now either as single account for her or joint account for us?

Has anyone recently opened a single, or joint bank account?

We are North of Toronto but wondering if maybe should try banks in Toronto?

Thanks.

Yes - tons of us here have successfully opened bank accounts or added a spouse as a joint account holder in this situation. You don't need a Canadian SIN.

I would keep visiting bank branches until you find one willing to do it. The success stories I remember seeing have all been with one of the big five. I don't know about credit unions.
