Open Work Permit- Spousal sponsorship PR

I am getting ready to submit my spousal sponsorship application in the coming weeks (I am the principal applicant, my wife is the sponsor).

I am currently an American citizen living in Canada on a Post Graduation Open Work Permit. My current permit expires on Dec. 6th this year. I am going to be applying for either a new work permit or an extension on my current one so that I can remain on implied status until my temporary status is renewed while I wait for my spousal sponsorship to go through.

My question for you guys is-

Do I have to apply to extend my permit, or should I just flat out apply for a new one?

If I am to extend it, I have to do so within the next week (because they request that you apply 30 days before it expires). Possible, but i'd rather not rush the final details of my PR application. Am I able to just apply for a new one with my PR application before Dec. 6th?

Is there a major difference or recommendation between the two?

Can I also apply for a visitor visa as extra security? Should I?


All tips and info provided is greatly appreciated.

It is an open work permit.

There is no option for you to apply for a new OWP or extend your current OWP. You will be applying for an OWP when you submit your spousal sponsorship but that will take 5+ monthe these days. If you wanted to apply for a WP it will have to be a closes WP from an employer. You don't need to apply a month before tour WP expires. You can also change tour status to a visitor status before your WP expires.

Ok, so if I follow you correctly my course of action should be the following-

Send my PR application in before my current work permit expires - with a new open work permit attached.

This should grant me implied status while I wait for a decision on said work permit because I am applying while my current work permit is still active.

Yes you will be granted implied status but only to remain in Canada and not to work. Can others confirm that I am correct?
