I am a foreign-trained Psychiatric Nurse with many years of work experience. Due to age and other constraints, it seems unlikely that I can gain sufficient points to be considered under the Express Entry. I am considering applying for a temporary work permit/ temporary residence visa. Am I likely to be considered for an open temporary permit?. Will my spouse be allowed to work and study in Canada during our stay?

How are you eligible for an open work permit? You are not eligible. You need a job offer and the employer needs a LMIA paying $1000 and proving no Canadian or PR can do the job. Then you apply for a closed work permit. The process takes a long time. Also you need to be licensed to work as a nurse so look at NNAS for the process. Your spouse needs a study permit to study.

No, I'm just thinking ahead - yet to start the process. I'm a bit conversant with the preconditions for the WP application and requirement to practice in Canada as a foreign-trained Nurse. I just want to know if I can be considered for the open WP, and the possibility of my spouse engaging in studies. However, from your response, it seems I can only be given a closed WP (not open WP). If that's the case, is it worth it?. What are the pros & cons?.

You are not eligible for an open work permit so not an option. You need to find an employer, get a job offer and then have the employer file for a LMIA? That will take months to process. Then if successful you apply for a closed work permit. if you are not licensed as a nurse in Canada then you can't get a job offer.

If your spouse wants to study, he applies for a study permit. He needs to show career and education advancement, funds, ties to home country etc.
