We are expat, husband Canadian.

Have to leave our country of residence, husband got no right of abode in the UK plus we want to settle in Canada.

My MiL called in-country to ask if we can enter Canada whilst the process was under application and was told yes.

In reality, how does this work? Is it as simple as leaving the country every 6 months?

Thank you.

Depends. If you file INLAND you can stay permanently if I recall correctly. You can't leave the country though or there's a huge chance your application will be voided. (takes around 2 years or so)
As for OUTLAND you can stay for 6 months, and around the 5 month mark apply for an extension for however long. (takes around 7-12 months from most timelines. Normally around the 6-8 month marks.)

Thank you. As per other threads, London processing times are now up to 29 months.

The chance of having my inland application voided if I leave the country is a worry because I have elderly family.

I guess if I can enter and do border runs while my outland application is going through, then I should hopefully be ok.

Remember that Islamabad transferred a ton of files in 2012 (all of them?), so the fact that those files were completed in the past year, means that London's time now has to include them, hence the 29 months.

I would still expect about 8-10 months for PR through outland, while inland is minimum 2+ years, with no chance of it being done faster. Outland can be faster if you have a strong application.

Thank you. I'm hoping we're a strong case. Been married for 12 years, have a child together, joint bank accounts, joint properties, photographic proof of having met each other's families etc.

I only noticed today that London has gone up to 29 months :(

It should only take about 8-10 months like MilesAway said. That is for OUTLAND though.

Thank you to everybody who took the time to reply.

I have got over my initial panic (with your help) and will continue with my Outland application.

You've been married for 12 years, that is a pretty strong case right there. You have a child together, and you're from the UK (right?), which is not known as a high-risk country.

There have been a few cases for those from visa-exempt countries, with "straightforward" applications whose files have been kept in Canada (Mississauga or Ottawa), and processed in 3-6 months total. You wouldn't even have your OWP for inland by then. Of course, there is no guarantee that would happen to you (3-6 months), but the 2 years inland is a guarantee.

Yes, I'm from the UK.

Fingers crossed I'm lucky :)

Would I be wise to book a ticket from Canada for the UK (and hopefully never need to use it) rather than just having the one-way I have now?
