Background: I have been working in Montreal (Québec) since 2014 with a skilled worker visa in a research position (no LMA necessary). My wife is also working here in the exact same conditions as I am. We are thinking of applying for residence, but have not started the CSQ application yet.
I am now thinking of switching jobs, leave academia and go to the industry. For that, I need a work permit that would allow me to work at any given company. I could get a LMA and then a work permit when I find a suitable job, but that takes a long time. I could also apply for an open work permit with my wife, as she is a skilled worker in NOC A, but that also takes around 3 months, and I don't want to leave my academic position without any other offer down the line. I understand I cannot hold two work permits simultaneously.
My question is: in the event that I find a company job that I like, would it be possible for me to get to the border and request an open work permit there? I understand that would be a possibility. If that is true, should my wife come with me with her work permit, along with a certificate of marriage, or can I just bring a copy of her work permit?
Thanks a lot for your help.
