Hi experts, I hope this is the right place for this question

My parents have immigrated to Canada for a few calendar years. I understand that to qualify for the Old age security benefit, they must have resided in Canada for over 10 years but how is it calculated? Does it have a requirement like having to be more than six months for a calendar year for it to be considered? Or is it just counting the number of months in Canada? For example

- Jan to May 2020, then Dec 2020 to Mar 2021, does it count for one year or none?

In addition, does it have to be continuously 10 years? For example, in the above case, if they come back Jan in 2022. Do the years accumulated before all got reset? Any official links for the requirement are appreciated.

Thank you!
