I am originally from the UK but I now live in Canada, I have been a Permanent Resident for over 5 years now and recently before my PR card expired I applied for citizenship in Canada, as we know the process for citizenship takes a while and so before I am likely to receive my citizenship approval I need to go back to the U.K.

I know that I can apply for a PRTD while in the UK but I can only go back for a couple of weeks due to work commitments here in Canada.

Is it possible to obtain a PRTD prior to leaving Canada to ensure a problem free return after a couple weeks visiting UK?

If so How? The application for PRTD is basically designed for people who are currently not in Canada but wanting to gain access (e.g. someone who may have lost their PR card) not in my case someone who has an expired card.

Unfortunately, you cant apply within Canada. You have to apply in UK.

It actually is used precisely for such cases where a PR has not yet renewed PR card. As noted you must apply for it from abroad.

Since citizenship apps seems to be fairly slow right now, you really should consider applying for new PR card now (even if it won't be soon enough for your planned trip).

Ok thanks so even though I have applied for citizenship I can also apply for PR while I’m waiting?

We did something similar back then. But since we know citizenship will take a while, we actually applied for PR card renewal and then apply for citizenship.
The only cost would be taking extra photos and paying for the renewal fee. The information in both applicantions are similar.

Thanks, yes it looks like I might have to apply to renew PR card, not sure how long it will take but might be the only option

Inconvenient but still probably worth it (given that citizenship apps really are taking a while).

On the bright side, there's a least some chance that having pending PR and citizenship apps will mean somewhat quicker processing of PRTD (there shouldn't be much doubt about your compliance with the residency obligation).
