Hi everyone,

I am trying to get my application ready, and gotta say it's a lot of work and I'm getting quite sick of it! However, I have to get it done asap, and one of the things I am struggling with is figuring out which address I should put for myself? Here are some details:

-I'm Norwegian and applying for PR through common-law status with my Canadian girlfriend.
-We met in Australia and lived together there for about 4 months.
-After we graduated we moved to Canada (January 2010) and have lived together here since then.
-I have had a visitor status in Canada the whole time, and have simply renewed my status by going on holidays abroad or home to see my family.
-We are planning on applying "outland".

Now, since we did not live together for a long enough time to qualify for PR in Australia I will show them that I have an address in Canada that I share with my girlfriend. However, since I want to apply "outland" through the Mississauga processing centre I am under the belief that I have to put my Norwegian address down in the document IMM008 APPLICATION FOR PERMANENT RESIDENCY? What I am worried about then is the mixed signals I'm sending by giving a Norwegian address as my mailing address there, but then later claim that I am living in Canada. Will this cause any problems or is it just the way you have to do it if parts of the 1 year you have to have lived together has been spent in Canada but you don't want to apply inland?

Thanks for any help.

PS. Bonusquestion: On the same IMM008 form they ask the following question: "How many family members (including yourself) are included in this application for permanent residence in Canada?" If I do not have any children, should I write 1? Or do I need to write 2, so that I include my girlfriend who is sponsoring me?

Applying out land does not mean you cannot deal with this from within Canada.
As you are in Canada the mailing address is the Canadian one.

Bonus question - the number is 1
Your girlfriend is a Canadian Citizen already.

Thank you very much sir. What about my residential address? I just remember reading somewhere that either the mailing or the residential (i dont remember which one) has to be from your "native" country if you want to apply outland? I've been doing a lot of searches on this forum to try to come up with the answer, but can't find anything clear cut.

So if I put my Norwegian address as my residential so that I can apply outland, will it not be a problem as it conflicts with the residential address I have in Canada that I use to prove my common law status?

Edit - You put your ... home (native) address in the residential box.

Outland has not got a lot to do with the way you describe it.

You are applying common law, you will fill out this form http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/IMM5409E.pdf

for common law you will need to provide evidence of continuous cohabitation for twelve months. It can be multiple addresses but both of you must have lived together at each address you declare.

Ok but like you said, we have to live together at each address and my concern is that I'm "declaring" my residential address as the one I am staying at right now, while in fact I am living in Canada. So I feel like I'm contradicting myself by first saying my residential address is in Norway, but then in the background declaration saying my address is in Canada. But maybe this is not something to be concerned about?

I believe that the residential address (native home) is used to determine the visa office you will be processed at (outland).

I don't think it matters what address you put. You are allowed to apply through any office you qualify to apply through: any country in which you are currently legally residing OR any country of which you are a citizen. It doesn't mean you have to live there. My partner has a british passport and south african passport and we live in a third country currently and he could choose to apply through london or pretoria and didn't have to be living in either.

Give the address you want to recieve your mail at so there aren't delays in receiving important document requests etc. If you are concerned about confusing the immigration officer, include a note as to why you are giving your Canadian address.

Ok thanks a lot everyone, much appreciated!

You can also declare your residential home address as the Canadian one. Some people don't really have an address abroad to provide, and there has been no problem providing a Canadian one, even if you're on visitor status in the country.

It should be fine either way you want to do it. Just make sure your mailing address is the one where you're actually living now. This is the address to which CIC will send you updates/AOR/etc. any mail communication they need to have with you.
