Hello everyone,

I was born in Canada and am a Canadian Citizen, however I have been living outside of Canada for most of my life. I haven't been back in 20 years.

My family has recently moved back there and I would like to move there for 6 months. The issue is that I am pregnant and will be giving birth at around my 3rd month of being in canada.

I was reading that I am not eligible for OHIP as I havent living the minimum period of time required each year.

Is there anything I will be eligible for? Will I have to pay international fees for my birthing process at the hospital?

Any advice would be kindly appreciated.

If you don't plan on remaining in Canada for over 6 months than you are not entitled to OHIP and will need to pay for your care. Would plan for 10K for a vaginal birth although it may be a bit less and around 15K for c-section. Most hospitals will require you to put down a deposit before the birth. If you are prgnant international travel is likely not advised due to the higher risk of covid while pregnant.

If you only plan to stay for 6 months, then you'll need to be prepared to pay for the costs of the birth out of pocket and won't be able to count on OHIP coverage. Getting private insurance is no longer an option since you are already pregnant.
