Hi all,
I am sponsoring my common law girlfriend who is from Sri Lanka.
She has a copy of her birth certificate, but not the original.
It is partially in English, and partially in Sinhalese.

The guide says:

"You must submit the following for any document that is not in English or French, unless otherwise stated on your document checklist:

  • the English or French translation; and
  • an affidavit from the person who completed the translation (see below for details); and
  • a certified copy of the original document.
"

I can't get a certified copy of the original document since we don't have the original, just a photocopy.
Is this a big deal?
Thanks for any help.

Is there a way she can request a new one from the government? I know in Canada and the US, there are government records departments that issue replacement birth certificates, try finding the Sri Lankan equivalent.

Yes, it is a big deal. If you don't provide exactly what they ask for you, your odds of having the application rejected go way up. As the person above said, ask her to go get a new birth certificate from the competent authority in Sri Lanka. If it is impossible to get a new one (say this was Afghanistan or Iraq and all records were destroyed) then you could ask them to accept what you have, and they would probably accommodate your request. Sri Lanka isn't like that, you ought to be able to get a new certificate.
