Hi
I had sent my application around the first week of April '09. Out of curiosity I checked back with my bank and found that the Draft that I sent along with my application has been encashed. around the 3rd week of April. I havent recieved any correspondence from the consulate. Is this normal ?

so that means it has been two weeks since they received. the time when you'd get the AOR really also depends on postal times.

Not two weeks, but 4 weeks since they recieved the mail. It reached on 9th of April, check encashed on 23rd April and yet no communication (today is 4th of May)

give it about month more depending on your location. . i submitted application jan 27 received my aor march 12 and the letter was dated feb 12.

you have to assume that they only started looking at your application from when they encashed it (or around there). A lot of the time length is determined by postal times.

By the way I am located in California

you should get it in the next week or so i guess.

Probably what I am trying to understand is - does the encashment of check state anything? Or are there chances that my application could be returned still

i am not sure, but i think OP6 has the procedure on it.

But, If it is a positive reply, should I count 120 days from the date I received the letter ??? Should I collect my documents before I get a reply??

Encashment of DD does not mean any positive thing. Every DD they recieve is encashed, whether they accept to process further or refuse it. They refund money if application is refused before it is started to process.

thanks.

you should count the days from when the AOR is dated. if your documents are such that they take a long time, then collect them early. You might end up wasting some money (in the event you get refused) but it might be worth the risk.
