Hi everyone. I was hoping that there are some kind souls that could possibly guide me in the right direction here. I am a Canadian citizen hoping to sponsor my American Husband. We are expecting a baby soon and would like to live in Canada. Canada is my home but I am currently visiting him in the States. I have a few questions here. Please help!

I understand that I can only apply outbound because my hubby lives in the US but if we do his medical examination in Canada (since we plan to be in canada during christmas) will that be ok? or does it HAVE to be done in the states? btw, the nearest doctor on the list is pretty far away.

If we were to apply inbound, would the application be expedited?

Does Everything in the packet need to be submitted at the SAME time? or are there steps to follow?

According to the website, the USA new york office takes 33 months and LA is 28 months. Is this REALLY how long it takes to sponsor my husband? I was hoping for less than a year. Are there any cases where it takes less than a year?

I apologize in advance for some of my questions. I tried calling CIC but unfortunately, my call cannot be answered since im calling from usa.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post. I look forward to hearing some of your responses.

He can take the medical anywhere he likes, as long as it is a panel physician on the CIC list.

If you were to apply inbound, there is no hope of getting the application expedited. He should not leave Canada for any reason at any time, or he risks having his application cancelled.

Everything needs to be submitted at the same time.

NY does not process any applications. If you read the instructions, it says that US applications are processed in Ottawa. A few exceptional cases with issues such as criminal inadmissibility are sent to LA, where they take around a year to process. Many normal cases processed in Ottawa take about 6 months. Unless your husband has a failed refugee application or has been convicted of a serious crime or has medical issues that might render him inadmissible, he should get PR well within a year.

Welcome to your new favorite website! LOL!

You can apply now while you are both in the U.S., but you really should include the medical WITH the application.

If you apply Inland, it would be a HUGE mistake. The current processing time is well over 1 year just for stage 1 approval. American's applying Outland are completing the entire process now in well under 6 months!

Everything is sent at once, but the FBI PCC can be sent later (because it now takes ~ 12 weeks to receive it). Just include a letter with your application explaining that it has been ordered and will be forwarded upon receipt.

Most American applications are processed in Ottawa, which is why so many get through the process sooooo much faster now!

Lastly, the total fees amount can be confusing for some to calculate. If your husband is the only one seeking permanent resident status is Canada (meaning that he has no children under 19 years of age), you will need to pay:

Sponsor fee- $75

Applicant fee- $475
(note: He would not need to pay the Spouse or common-law partner fee of $550, because he is in essence both combined into one application).

RPRF (Right of Permanent Residence)- $490

Total is $1040

Good luck!

Hi Newbie,

If you husband can get to Canada, you can apply inland and Outland. But everyone will suggest you to do Outland because it is much faster for American doing Outland. It is possible to get PR within five months if your case doesn't have any red flag.

He also can stay in Canada when waiting for Outland processing but the problem is that he can't work in Canada.

He can have medical done in Canada.

Good luck
