Okay so, I'm very new to this process, I'm a Canadian, born and raised, but my girlfriend is from Spain and wants to come here. She was wondering if she can come, paying for insurance monthly, as she can only afford to stay for a month, without a job. She has an approved visa but has yet to activate it. So, she wants to try and get insurance month-to-month instead of 12 months all at once, that way, if she doesn't manage to find a job within that first month, she can go back without wasting 350€ in insurance that she won't be able to use. We were wondering if, if she does this, would her visa only be activated for that one month, or would they activate it for 12 months? If only for one, would the visa be wasted?

Although you haven't said it, it sounds like she has an IEC / working holiday visa.

She needs to have the full 12 months of health insurance when she arrives or she's at risk of CBSA only issuing a 1 month work permit. If that happens, there will be no way to extend and she will end up wasting the visa.

Is there by any chance you might have any suggestions on what could be done?

What type of suggestions are you looking for? What permit is she entering on? If an IEC, and she enters with only one month of health insurance then she will a) be denied entry and not issued work permit or b) given a one month IEC. If b, then she gets one month for a work permit and then must re-enter the IEC pool.

So the suggestion is to pay one year of health insurance so she gets a one year IEC.

She's got a working holiday permit, but she was considering an option of an insurance plan that is supposed to cover 12 months but can be paid monthly, but I'm not certain about this option, as I said in the title of this post, I'm very new to all of this.

She needs to be able to show she has 12 months of health insurance coverage when she arrives in Canada.

Paid monthly is not health insurance for the duration of her stay. See below…it says purchase which means pay. So she needs to show a year of paid insurance if she wants a year IEC. If not, she may only get a work permit for the duration of her health insurance.

Your health insurance must cover the entire time you’re here.

You should purchase 1 policy to cover the entire length of your work permit. If this isn’t possible, you can get 2 consecutive policies instead.
