Hello Everyone,

I am currently a PR holder in Canada and I recently received a new passport from my home country as the previous one was near expiry. I wanted to check should I update IRCC about it? Is my PR linked to my passport (previous one) by any means? If yes, how do I do so?

Hello Everyone,

No need. It's not indicated on your PR card. PRs who have changed citizenship don't even really need to update.

CBSA /probably/ has a link between 'you' (the abstract entity / computer record / UCI life form), your PR card, and your current passport in their databases*, and /probably/ will link your new passport at some point (eg by name / DOB / other metadata), but you don't need to worry about that.

That said: I'd recommend having a copy (physical or a picture on your phone) of your old passport when you travel. You never know when someone may want - at a port of entry, or airline check-in - to confirm that you-are-you and the photos/docs make sense. That said, I've not really heard of this coming up (although one could easily dream up scenarios where they might).

* They obviously have databases for all of this, with records by UCI, and they'll link when the airplane manifests are cleared with CBSA / air safety clearances, etc.

@armoured

I do have soft copy of my old passport which I can even carry when I travel as a back up. Alright. This is super helpful. So, I will not bother calling IRCC about it. Thank you very much.

This I recon, will only happen when I travel. Otherwise, they have no other means to validate that I have a new passport, right? This is the reason why I had posted the question in first place.

Yes. Or put differently, less a question of 'means to validate', but rather the first interaction they have with it.

Renewing passports is mostly routine - expected that PRs will have to replace them from time to time. It's not a big deal.
