This may sound naive, but my boyfriend and I are trying to figure out the best way to get him here. He is in a skilled trade and we're just not sure if getting a work visa is the best way to go about it. We've been together for a year and a bit with plans on him moving here and getting married. Anyone have any tips on the best options? He has a daughter who would be coming with him (custody wise this isn't an issue). Please help, we don't even know where to start.

You haven't told us how old he is or where he is from. However generally speaking, he needs to secure a full time job offer from an employer in Canada and that employer must obtain an approved LMIA in order for him to then be able to apply for a work permit. So the first step would be finding an employer willing to offer him a full time job.

You could also go to his country and marry and apply for sponsorship.
As mentioned above, getting a work permit is not an easy process.
